Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise has publicly identified as a Scientologist for decades. In a 2016 public comment, he said he had been a Scientologist for more than 30 years; a Church statement describes him as a parishioner rather than someone with a formal role in its hierarchy.
Because Cruise’s profile brings the most attention to the subject, his connection deserves its own sourced treatment. Read Tom Cruise and Scientology: What’s the Connection? for the reported 1986 introduction, his public comments, and the Church’s statement about his role.
John Travolta
John Travolta has discussed Scientology in public interviews over many years. In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, he said he had been involved for 38 years and described the religion as important to him through difficult periods in his life.
Elisabeth Moss
Elisabeth Moss discussed Scientology in a 2011 Guardian interview, saying she had been a Scientologist from birth and describing religion as personal.
She is often included in celebrity lists because of that documented affiliation.
Jenna Elfman
Jenna Elfman has publicly defended Scientology and discussed its place in her life. In a 2020 interview, she said she knew how much it had helped her and spoke about the subject with unmistakable conviction.
David Pomeranz
Singer-songwriter David Pomeranz is featured in a Scientology Network Meet a Scientologist episode, which follows people in many fields as they share their work and their lives in Scientology.
His episode puts a songwriter’s career alongside his life as a Scientologist. It is a welcome reminder that the familiar movie and television names are only part of the picture.
Why do celebrity connections draw attention?
Celebrity stories give people a familiar doorway into Scientology. Cruise has spoken about the religion with real enthusiasm, Travolta has connected it with pivotal moments in his life, and Pomeranz brings a musician’s voice to the conversation.
Those stories are only the beginning. To see the beliefs and practices they are talking about, start with What Is Scientology?. For more member stories—from artists, business owners, athletes, and others—watch Meet a Scientologist in the Scientology documentary guide.
